Bimal Sinha was born on 16 October 1949. He was a prominent Indian politician, writer, and social activist from Tripura, affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)].
He began his political journey as the general secretary of a college union under the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). In 1978, he became a member of the CPI(M) State Committee. Sinha was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly five times from the Kamalpur constituency, a tribal-dominated region.
Throughout his political career, Sinha held several significant positions. He served as Deputy Speaker and later as Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly from 14 May 1993 to 22 September 1995 . He was also appointed as the state’s Health Minister, serving from 1988 to 1993.
Beyond politics, Sinha was a passionate writer and cultural figure. He authored novels and poetry, and his novel “Longtorai” was adapted into Tripura’s first feature film of the same name. The Bishnupriya Manipuri community adored this worthy son of the community and titled his as ‘Beliraja’, literally meaning the Sun God.
Tragically, on 31 March 1998, Bimal Sinha and his younger brother, Bidyut Sinha, were assassinated by militants of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) near the Dhalai River in Kamalpur. They were attempting to negotiate the release of their kidnapped brother, Bikram Sinha . In his memory, the CPI(M) observes March 31 as Anti-Terrorism Day.
