MANINDRA KUMAR SINHA

Shri Manindra Kumar Sinha, MSc(Bot), IFS, after serving a prolonged tenure as the president of Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha (2003 to 2023), resigned from the chair citing age related heath issues. Being in the chair for such a long period, he has seen and led the organization through many challenges. Led the organization with zeal, conviction and decisiveness. The organization, during his tenure with the chair has acheived number of success for the community, and remained graceful with the failures too.

Manindra Kumar Sinha, hails originally from Khunou village in Narsingpur, Cachar., the 4th son of Lt. Sena Sinha, a.k.a. Pohon. An Indian Forest Service official by profession, his social portrait is characterized by his boldness and decisiveness. Before being the president of BMSS, he also chaired as the working president from 1989 to 2003. Apart from BMSS, he also chaired organizations like the Bishnupriya Manipuri Samaj Sangstha and the Sri Sri Radhamadhab Sevashram, Maligaon, Guwahati.

Some of the achievements of Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha, which may be attributed to his leadership are, (i) winning judgement in favour of the community from the Gauhati High Court, in the case against the State OBC Commission for recognition of the language nomenclature (1994) (ii) winning the Supreme Court judgement along with few other organizations against objections raised by Govt. of Manipur & K. Kumardhan Singh against the ruling by the Gauhati High Court on the language nomenclature (1996), and (iii) winning the judgement against Govt. of Assam for appointment and regularization of Bishnupriya Manipuri Language teachers. (2001)

He is succeeded by Dr. Smriti Kumar Sinha, MSc. PhD, Former Dean, Tezpur Central University, Napaam. A well known and respected personality from the academic fraternity, a renowned and a versatile writer, technical expert and full of empathy and passion for the language and community to which he is born.

Bishnupriya Manipuris

The Meiteis and the Bishnupriyas are descendants of two distinct races coming from two different directions. The Меiteіѕ belong to the Mongoloid group and the Bishnupriyas are of the Indo-Aryan stock. The Meitei language developed from the Tibeto-Burman language group and Bishnupriya Manipuri language finds it root in the Маgadhi Рrakrita stem of the Indo-Aryan laguage group.

But in spite of these differences in regard to the racial and linguistic origin of these two sections, a sense of ‘one community has developed between them, as it is clear from the following facts. Read more …..
