DR KP SINHA 87TH BIRTHDAY

The 87th Birthday of Late Dr. Kali Prasad Sinha (PhD, D.Litt., Geetacharya); noted scholar, researcher, linguist, academician, a literary personality and a visionary of modern times for the Bishnupriya Manipuri community was celebrated by Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha and Krishi O Samaj Bikash Samiti, Narsingpur on 3rd January 2024 at the Bhubaneshwar Sadhuthakur Ashram, Silchar.

Attended by a number of dignitaries from academic, cultural, literary and other voluntary and professional background, the program consisted of speeches by the invited chief guest, the honoured guests and other voluntary speakers, felicitations and cultural performances. Prominent among dignitaries those invited were Chief Guest Dr. Tapodhir Bhattacharjee, Ex Vice-Chancellor, Assam University, Silchar, Dr. Smriti Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor, Pragjyotishpur University, Guwahati, Guest of Honour Shri Sanjib Deb Laskar, President Cachar Jila Samiti, Barak Upatyaka Banga Sahitya O Sanskriti Sammelan and Dr Jogeshwar Barman, President, Silchar Committee, Assam Sahitya Sabha, Dr. Manas Sinha. President, Shri Chaitainya Bhagawat Sangstha, Silchar.

The meeting was presided by the Working President of Bishnupriya Manipuri Sahitya Sabha, Shri (Prof) Barindra Kumar Sinha and conducted by prominent social worker public leader Shri Samir Sinha and Subir Sinha, and Dilip Kumar Sinha. The welcome address was presented by the General Secretary, Shri Manikanta Sinha.

The success of the grand occasion was a reflection of the relentless and committed effort of all the members and workers of BMSS. This effort may be termed as a success at bringing people connected to different organisational banners under a single roof for a common and better cause and thus hitting hard at the myth of a divided Bishnupriya Manipuri community.

Bishnupriya Manipuris

The Meiteis and the Bishnupriyas are descendants of two distinct races coming from two different directions. The Меiteіѕ belong to the Mongoloid group and the Bishnupriyas are of the Indo-Aryan stock. The Meitei language developed from the Tibeto-Burman language group and Bishnupriya Manipuri language finds it root in the Маgadhi Рrakrita stem of the Indo-Aryan laguage group.

But in spite of these differences in regard to the racial and linguistic origin of these two sections, a sense of ‘one community has developed between them, as it is clear from the following facts. Read more …..
